Travel more often to see the beauty of the world

The environment we grow up with informs how we define “nature. Encounters with truly wild places inspire people to preserve them.   Think, for a moment, about the last time you were out in nature. Were you in a city park? At a campground? On the beach? In the mountains? Now consider: What was this place like in your parents’ time? Your grandparents’? In many cases, the parks, beaches and campgrounds of today are surrounded by more development, or are themselves more developed, than they were decades ago. But to you, they still feel like nature. "If we just try to teach people the importance of nature, that’s not going to work. They have to interact with it". —Peter Kahn / Psychology environmental generational amnesia — the idea that each generation perceives the environment into which it’s born, no matter how developed, urbanized or polluted, as the norm. And so what each generation comes to think of as “nature” is relative, based on what they’re exposed t

The Fashion Show As We Know It Is Over (For Now!)

Image
On a cold February afternoon—before COVID-19 had assailed Paris, and women’s Fashion Week was still in full swing—I pedaled my bicycle from my Left Bank home/office to the Dior show in the Tuileries. And as I came across the Seine, there before me was a sea of shiny black sedans—scores of them—parked on the majestic Place de la Concorde. They would sit there, idling, for an hour, as the thousand or so editors, retailers, bloggers, and influencers made their way through the glorious gates of the park to a sprawling tent pitched solely for the 10-minute show. As I locked my bike, I thought, “None of this is sustainable.” Not only that. Once inside, everyone looked so bored . I haven’t attended the shows for a few years, since I was working on my new book, Fashionopolis: The Price of Fast Fashion and the Future of Clothes . But I had heard—and even read—complaints from those privileged enough to be invited. Fashion Week felt old, they said. Too many shows. The season dragged on

We enjoyed Creation Wines Virtual Wine Tasting Experience at home

Image
How it works: Creation Wines is a beautiful winery in the Hemel an Aarde Valley. I have yet to visit this wine farm but it’s definitely on my  to-visit  list when I am in Cape Town again. This winery has created virtual experiences where you can enjoy a Creation wine tasting in the comfort of your own home. During these times, I love how innovative this concept is! After placing an order online for the  Creation Virtual Tasting Pack , I was then sent an email and had to choose a Creation personal shopper. The Creation personal shopper is a wine fundi who will guide you through the wine tasting via a Zoom call. A virtual wine tasting is such a fun experience! A friend of mine ordered the kit also and we arranged to do the wine tasting together, over Zoom, with the same personal shopper on a Saturday afternoon. We both went all out and made cheese platters to accompany the wine tasting. It felt like we were definitely in the winelands, but without those ma

Wine Country adds new ultra-luxury resort in the midst of a pandemic shutdown

Image
Matt Villano • Updated 26th December 2020 Healdsburg, California (CNN) — The newest ultra-luxury resort in California Wine Country has a yoga lawn in the middle of a vineyard, a guest-friendly apiary program, a massage with locally sourced olive oil and a special glass-enclosed dining room that is cantilevered into the middle of a 100-year-old oak tree. Still, perhaps the most notable attribute of the new Montage Healdsburg in Sonoma County is that the 130-room resort with rates starting at $695 per night opened in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. Technically, the 258-acre resort in this tiny-but-vibrant town opened earlier this month (Dec. 12). Because that date also was the start of the county's latest shelter-in-place edict, occupancy is way below what management expected, and the hotel is significantly limited to "essential" travelers only by order of the county public health officer. When the order expires, guests will enjoy one of the most highfal
